Grade 6 Calligraphy Training Day 2
Today wasn't a day for calligraphy training, so I went to watch the movie "The Reason I Went to Space" at the cinema. It documented the process leading up to Mr. Maezawa's space journey, including his rigorous training and studies. It's a documentary from launch to return on the Soyuz, and I shed tears of emotion.
"Does going to space change one's outlook on life?" Mr. Maezawa was often asked in interviews. Initially, he was somewhat resistant, saying, "Does it have to change?" But as time passed, he became more interested in "the importance of small things in daily life" rather than achieving big things. I very much empathize with that.
After the movie, feeling refreshed, I went for a walk. That's when my sixth-grade niece called. She said, "I managed to practice calligraphy today!" So, unexpectedly, we changed plans to make it Calligraphy Training Day 2, especially since my sister, a great teacher, was also there.
As a snack, I bought Lindt white chocolate, starting with a reward. (Laugh) We began in high spirits. First, a warm-up sheet, then watching my sister write in real-time. While filming, I did live commentary with my niece, which seemed to help her absorb what to focus on better than just watching.
You can see the teacher writing on YouTube, but watching the actual movement of the hands is far more effective for learning. And then, when my niece tried writing right after, her writing had significantly evolved from Day 1!
Her writing changed dramatically, feeling more alive and dynamic than the textbook-style characters printed on the school-issued paper, which my sister had written.
My niece was satisfied with this progress. It made her feel like she could do even better. (Laugh) The characters she barely touched yesterday showed significant improvement today. This change in her approach to each character seemed to enhance her meta-cognitive abilities, paving the way for further improvement.
In calligraphy, the essence is to complete in one stroke. My sister was earnestly teaching her how to regain balance immediately after sensing a mistake. This goes beyond mere calligraphy skills; it's a vital tool for mental strength.
Additionally, our aunt's cunning plan to "bring a mediocre homework to school and catch others off guard" made my niece laugh. (Laugh)
Then, for dinner, we had exquisite sukiyaki, jokingly celebrating as if we had already won the gold prize. Finally, it was time for cleanup. My niece washed the brush and my sister's inkstone, which is one and a half times the size of a regular school inkstone. She even brought her own school inkstone, insisting, "I'll wash this too!" Usually reluctant to touch these, her proactive approach today showed her personal growth. And just to be sure, we'll have one more day of special training!
